Only ±15,000 students of the 1.6 million across the country who took the qualifying test were named Finalists.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.

Some 50,000 students with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualified for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program this past September. Indian Hill’s Class of 2017 boasted 21 students who qualified, nine as Semi-Finalists and 12 as Commended Students.

Semi-Finalists may choose to continue on in the competition to be named Finalists. Finalist competition is based on academic standards and other requirements. This year’s Finalists from Indian Hill High School are (in alphabetical order) Brendan Ho (Kenwood); Hailey Magenheim (Blue Ash); Sydney Miles (Kenwood); Jeongwon Ryu (Blue Ash); Nicholas Saba (Indian Hill); Josika Sammarco (Indian Hill); and Katherine Sullivan (Indian Hill).
